Penelope Cruz
Getting back to work after her big win, Cruz starred in “Nine” (2009), Rob Marshall’s musical loosely based on Fellini’s “8 ½” (1963) that focused on a struggling film director (Daniel Day-Lewis) who tries to make a movie while dealing with all the demanding women in his life – his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Cruz), his star (Nicole Kidman) and even his diseased mother (Sophia Loren). For her work in the film, she received nominations at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Supporting Actress. She next reunited with director and old friend Almodóvar for “Broken Embraces” (2009), a neo-noir about a writer blinded from a car accident who pines for the lost love of his life (Cruz).

Nicole Kidman
Kidman returned to arthouses with the comedy-drama “Margot at the Wedding” (2007) by “Squid and the Whale” (2005) director and screenwriter Noah Baumbach. In this film, Kidman was in familiar territory as a neurotic writer who clashes with her sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh) over her choice of fiancée (Jack Black). She then shifted gears to play a villainess (her first in her career) in the epic fantasy “The Golden Compass” (2007), an elaborate adaptation of Philip Pullman’s The Northern Lights, the first novel in the massively popular His Dark Materials trilogy. In 2008, Luhrmann tapped Kidman to star in the World War II era epic "Australia" (2008), co-starring fellow Aussie and friend Hugh Jackman, but the expectedly elaborate production was a dismal failure with critics and only brought in box office numbers overseas. The actress gave birth to a daughter, Sunday Rose, with husband Keith Urban that summer and returned to theaters in 2009 in Rob Marshall’s adaptation of the 1982 Tony Award-winning musical “Nine” (2009). Echoing its original source material, Federico Fellini’s “8 ½” (1963), the film starred Daniel Day-Lewis as an aging filmmaker struggling to finish a film while preoccupied with complicated relationships with his wife (Marion Cotillard) and his film star muse (Kidman).

Marion Cotillard
Marion Cotillard was in an older section of Paris, France, drinking Bollinger champagne, when she found out about her Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The French actress spoke English slowly and carefully while she expressed her exhilaration and gratitude for the momentous occasion, declaring “This is a very unique thing for a French girl.” She was being recognized internationally for her brilliant work in “La Vie en Rose” (2007), a remarkable biopic that followed the life of French singer Edith Piaf. Cotillard’s Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning performance cemented her place as one of 2007’s breakout stars, even though she had starred in over 20 films in her native France since the mid-1990s. American audiences received their first glimpse of the raven-haired beauty in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish” (2003) and the popular art house import, “A Very Long Engagement” (2005). Following her powerhouse performance as Piaf, the actress was in demand by filmmakers and proved worthy of the buzz with a supporting role opposite Johnny Depp in Michael Mann’s slick Chicago crime log, “Public Enemies” (2009), as well as further roles that showcased her way with complex, strong women, trying to live within the confines of acceptable society.

Kate Hudson
Hudson took a break from predictable comedies and went on to join the high caliber ensemble of Rob Marshall’s “Nine” (2009), a musical drama about an aging filmmaker (Daniel Day-Lewis) and the complicated women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his muse (Nicole Kidman), and a Vogue journalist (Hudson). Around the time of that film’s release Hudson was in the public spotlight for her love life once again; this time seen around with notorious womanizer and rumored Madonna ex, Alex 'A-Rod' Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. Often seen in the stadium stands throughout the fall, Hudson and Rodriguez made a striking couple and the paparazzi could not get enough of the couple, whether they be walking New York streets or sealing the Yankees’ World Series Win with an on-field kiss.
